ON
THE OTHER SIDE... | 2008
INTERNATIONAL LEONARD COHEN FESTIVAL
Clinker Live Cinema Performance commissioned by the
2008 INTERNATIONAL LEONARD COHEN FESTIVAL
Clinker’s “On the Other Side...”
explores Cohen’s continued romance with the light and dark inside
our human experience. An audio-visual “deep listening”
environment which draws from the vast depths of emotion written into
the words and music of Leonard Cohen.
The lush bass tones of Cohen’s voice provide a point of departure
for our journey inside Clinker’s cinema of sound and light.
Drawing from years of experience in creating and manipulating music
and audio, Clinker deconstructs and reassembles Cohen’s voice
into surreal “bass-scapes” using his unique and sophisticated
system of analogue and digital electronics. Clinker’s creation
will bathe the audience in an array of Cohen’s “golden”
vocal chords augmented with a connection between sonic and visual
details. Specially designed sub-sonic sound frequencies (created from
Cohen’s voice itself) reinforce the experience of extreme sound-movement
through the body.
Running Time:42:00 - 60:00 minutes
with musical accompaniment approximately 52 minutes
Clinker will be touring On the Other
Side throughout 2010...

CONTINENTAL
IN[DI]VISIBILITY | curated by TJ NORRIS
Clinker was invited to create an audio piece to be broadcast on London-based
ResonanceFM (www.resonancefm.com) which aired on Sunday, April 27,
2008. This was a "special edition" of the show 'Framework'
produced by Patrick McGinley (aka Murmer) of Perruel, France.
For this invitational curator TJ Norris invited work from international
composers cross the dividing lines of Asia, The Americas, Oceania
and Europe. The works presented are generated from or within a visual/space
context, works that somehow use kinetics, or are related to film/video
work, or have been used in an installation context. The sounds presented
as part of 'Continental In[di]visibility' form an invisible bond between
those working with an a/v context bringing about a deeper listening
and visualization experience for listeners. You can either stream
(for up to one week) or listen live. Invited artists and contributors
include: skoltz_kolgen, Brume, Seth Nehil, Yann Novak, Pe Lang + Zimoun,
Ethan Rose, Alexei Borisov & Anton Nikkila, Gal, Clinker, Steve
Peters, and Richard Francis.
The piece entitled "Provodyty - A New Terrain" was also
selected for the Dragon's Eye Recordings Third Anniversary Compilation

DIRT

Feature Film - 2008,
82 min
Directed by Meghna Haldar
Musical Score and Soundscapes composed by Clinker

"What
is it about feeling dirty that shames us into silence and disgust?"
asks director MEGHNA HALDAR in the feature documentary DIRT. From
the slums of Kolkata to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to a barbeque
joint in Central Texas - everyone has a different story. DIRT isn't
just a four letter word, it contains a world of meaning spanning the
divine to the profane. A quixotic odyssey into all things unclean,
featuring animation to make Hieronymus Bosch blush, tracks from GODSPEED
YOU! BLACK EMPEROR and an experimental soundscape by CLINKER, DIRT
digs deep to illuminate the positively filthy experience of being
human.

Clinker Audio Piece + Essay commissioned by Vague
Terrain Digital Arts Journal
WEBSITE
Clinker's Provody was originally created
as an audio piece for release in Vague
Terrain's Winter 2006 Journal focused on Minimalism. He was also
invited to write an essay contextualizing his work in this field which
can be downloaded
HERE.

PROVODY | LIVE
CINEMA
CLINKER’s Provody began as a commissioned audio
piece for Vague Terrain's Digital Arts Journal 2006 feature on Minimalism.
In 2007 it evolved into a full Live Cinema with a focus on creating
a live synchresis between audio-visual events with no pre-programmed
computer or MIDI synching. All A/V “connections” were
made possible organically through the use of various layering/phasing/video
mixing technics and unique to this piece, vocal microphone “pulses”
- which triggered real-time video effects.

| Tribryd Installation Soundtracks Deconstructed CD + DVD released
in 2007 by Innova Recordings.
WEBSITE

A
living archaeology of Portland, Oregon, would include its abandoned
shipyards and warehouses, its layers of graffiti, and industrial detritus.
Through the lens and imagination of artist TJ Norris, however, it
takes on a sumptuous other-worldliness. He has unpeeled its ever-evolving
history — of culture and place — in a set of three gallery
installations together dubbed Tribryd. ‘Trimix’, this
CD/DVD set, now re-imagines those events in yet another light.
TJ asked eleven international sound artists, including such underground
stars as Scanner, SETI, and Asmus Tietchens, to create electronic
works that would accompany him on his photo journeys around the industrial
Pacific Northwest. These sounds were then remixed and became an intrinsic
part of the installations, along with three new video works by Sue
Costabile, Ryan Jeffery and Clinker.
The emptiness and beauty of the urban landscape is captured in TJ’s
artwork:
“In the past five years I have witnessed much change along the
Willamette River as it snakes through the central core of the city
into new neighborhoods like South Waterfront. As it parts the compass
on its two sides, the mighty body of water provides a front for contemporary
surveyors to find old and new layered evidence, a history of change.
I've photographed under the many bridges, into train depots and many
in-between spaces to unlock the secrets and roar of their giant silence.”
Even if you have never been down a back alley in Oregon you will find
these sound and visual works resonating deep into the psyche, insistant
timeless nature among the concrete.
